If you’re not watching the USF-Boise State football game, you’re missing a potential classic. It’s on ESPN.

Tune in. Here’s why.

About midway through the third quarter Thursday night, we witnessed potentially one of the greatest plays in USF football history.

The Bulls lined up to punt, leading by three points over 25th-ranked Boise State. USF appeared ready to rely on its defense, which had been playing lights-out all night long.

But as the snap came back, neither Boise nor anyone else noticed that the receiver was freshman quarterback Lachlan Hewlett. Boise was caught off guard, and Hewlett, making the first pass of his college career, connected with receiver Keshaun Singleton for a 45-yard touchdown.

It put the Bulls ahead by 17-7 in front of the home crowd at Raymond James Stadium and a national TV audience. A touchdown run by Byrum Brown made it 24-7 USF with 1:44 left in the third.

There’s a long way to go, but the Bulls are not backing down.
