Buckeye Nation is aghast because Ohio State offensive coordinator (for the time being) Brian Hartline had the audacity to offer Angelo Smith a scholarship to USF. Hartline will head to USF once the Buckeyes conclude their run in the College Football Playoff.
Smith is the younger brother of OSU's Jeremiah Smith, who is one of the elite receivers in the country. The younger Smith, a three-star safety for Chaminadep\-Madonna Prep School near Fort Lauderdale, committed to Ohio State earlier this year.
He is in the class of 2027.
Extremely blessed to receive an offer from University of South Florida.#AGTG pic.twitter.com/RbmnyZvpHX

"He taught me so many things that other coaches haven't taught me at the college level,” Angelo said in Sports Illustrated of Hartline. “And when your coach knows what he's doing and teaching you, that's gonna separate you from other receivers.”
A quick sampling of Twitter reactions from Buckeye land expressed astonishment that Hartline would dare to do something like this.
Brian Hartline offering a scholarship to JJ Smiths younger brother when he is already committed to OSU is nasty work. #BuckeyeNation

So let me get this straight — our own offensive coordinator is offering a scholarship to a current Ohio State commit at his next school? https://t.co/TvTTVMGKuD

You got it right, Mr. Nut.
Poaching recruits is nothing new in college football.
Alex Golesh had barely landed at new job with Auburn when he flipped multiple USF recruits. They included tight end DJ Broughton, quarterback Rhys Brush, and offensive lineman Mykall Lundy-Foster.
“When he left (South Florida), it was an easy decision for me to go with him,” Broughton told AL.com. “I was just waiting on his call, telling me that he wanted me, that he was gonna bring me. So he called me, he said, ‘You want to come with me?’ I said, ‘You know I do.’ "
Golesh used the resources at South Florida to recruit those players but all it took was a phone call on Auburn's dime to get them to reconsider.
But somehow THE Ohio State University should be off-limits for stuff like this?
Get real.
