While USF fans are understandably focused on the success its men's and women's basketball teams are having, they also might want to give a thumbs up in the direction of High Point University in North Carolina.

That's where Ben Fletcher, who served as the interim head coach in 2024-25 after the sudden death of Amir Abdur-Rahim, now serves as an assistant at High Point. On Sunday afternoon, the Panthers qualified for the NCAA tournament after defeating Winthrop in the Big South Conference championship game.

Shortly before all that, Fletcher was honored with the National Association of Basketball Coaches Guardians of the Game Leadership Award . Fletcher was a steadying force as he guided the Bulls through the traumatic season following Coach Amir's passing.

"No one is more deserving of this award than Coach Fletcher," High Point head coach Flyn Clayman said. "From my time playing at Troy when he was an assistant coach, to working alongside side me today, Coach Fletcher has shown that character and values are of the utmost importance for him.

"After the tragic passing of Coach Amir Abdur-Rahim just before the 2024-25 season, Coach Fletcher led the South Florida program in the most difficult of situations, with honor and dignity. He certainly deserves this recognition and Amir is certainly looking down on his friend very proud of the work he has done and continues to do for the next generation."

Last season was obviously about more than wins and losses for the Bulls, and Fletcher was the right choice to lead the Bulls through that dark valley. He was a calm and steady figure throughout the season, and all of USF owes him a debt of thanks and appreciation for a job well done.

He obviously landed in a great spot at High Point.

The Panthers,, 30-4, will take a 14-game winning streak into the NCAA tournament. Fletcher has played a key role in the development of the Panthers defense helping HPU lead the country in steals per game (11.1) and turnover margin (7.5).

"To God be the Glory." Fletcher said. "I am honored to be recognized by the NABC for such a prestigious award.

"I have been blessed to be around some of the best leaders in our game. This award will be shared amongst the staff that all showed up everyday in an effort to be the example for our student athletes."
