When USF travels to Memphis on Saturday, the Bulls will be chasing two things -- a fourth American Conference win in as many tries, and an end to the Tigers' domination in this series.
USF hasn't beaten Memphis since 2016, when quarterback Quinton Flowers led the Bulls to a wild 49-42 win at the Liberty Bowl. Flowers completed 24-of-29 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 210 yards and three touchdowns. The Bulls had 416 yards rushing that day and five touchdowns.
The winning score came with 1:46 to play when Flowers ran for a 22-yard touchdown.
That is USF's only win against Memphis in the last eight meetings between the two teams.
USF moved up to 18th in the AP Top 25 poll after clobbering Florida Atlantic last week. That's nice, of course, but the bigger picture is staying on pace for an American Conference championship and berth in the College Football Playoffs.
Memphis, meanwhile, endured a shocking 31-24 loss last Saturday at UAB. It was the Tigers' first loss of the season, and it all but forces them to win out to have any chance for a spot in the conference championship game.
The Tigers have scored at least 20 points in 47 consecutive games, the longest streak in the nation. However, Memphis offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey warned that South Florida is “by far the best defense we’re going to play this year.”
USF's offense is also clicking. The Bulls have scored at least 48 points and surpassed 500 yards of total offense in their last four games. USF is averaging 57 points and 559 yards in that stretch.
It's also worth noting that two years ago, quarterback Byrum Brown threw for five touchdowns and 357 yards against Memphis, but the Bulls fell 59-50. Brown didn't face the Tigers last year because of an injury.
This is as big of a game as the Bulls have played since those halcyon days of Flowers and that 2016 team that finished 11-2. It might even be the biggest in program history, because of the playoff implications that weren't there in 2016.
