The USF women’s basketball team did what the Bulls should do against an overmatched opponent like Wichita State on Wednesday night. As you might have expected, the Bulls cruised to a 72-46 win on the road.
Let’s be honest: it was a cakewalk.
It’s also the sixth consecutive win for USF, which improved to 11-6 over and 4-0 in the American Athletic Conference. The Bulls are tied with UTSA for first place in the conference.
USF blew this one open quickly, leading 35-9 at one point. Sammie Puisis had 13 of her 16 total points in the first quarter. Point guard Mama Dembele played 20 minutes after missing most of the previous game because of a sore back.
Head coach Jose Fernandez still found some areas where his team can improve.
“I’ve been playing some different lineups there because we're on a two game swing, and I didn't think a couple groups defended really well. In the second quarter, you're up 27 or whatever we were, and then it gets down to 13. And now, you're back in the game in the second half,” he said.
Well, that’s true.
But USF quickly responded in the third quarter and squashed any delusions Wichita State might have had about a miracle rally.
The Bulls now turn their attention to North Texas on Saturday. The Mean Green is 11-5 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Their lone AAC loss came 65-62 at Tulane while USF was methodically dismantling Wichita State.
“We'll have two days to go on the road, play really good North Texas team, and then get back to a two game home stand.,” Fernandez said.
The Bulls haven’t lost since December 15 at South Carolina. Two of their four AAC wins have come on the road.
