No. 2: Matt Grothe. Grothe had swagger,  that’s for sure.

As the Bulls starting quarterback from 2006-09, he had 52 touchdowns and 44 interceptions. He did like to force the issue sometimes.

His 80-yard touchdown run at Pitt on the first play of the second half gave USF the lead in that game en route to a 48-37 victory.

He also threw the winning touchdown pass in overtime as the Bulls shocked Auburn in 2007.

Even without such heroics, though, Grothe forever earned his place in USF lore with a quote that lives forever. After the Bulls obliterated UCF 64-12 in 2007, Grothe quipped, “We weren’t even trying to run up the score. We were just that much better than them.”

His career was cut short after just three games into his senior season. He suffered a torn ACL in his left knee against Charleston Southern and missed the rest of the season.
