Like all major college football teams, USF’s games are always available on TV. So, you might wonder why the announcement on Monday that the Bulls’ games this season have a new radio home is a big deal.

I’ll give you two reasons why it is.

With Q105 FM now the new flagship home for USF football, its powerful signal will enable radio listeners to actually hear the games. That wasn’t always possible before.

The other reason it matters is that there are times when you might not be in front of your TV. You might be at the store, or the beach, or maybe watching your kid's soccer game.

I remember returning from a trip last fall on the day about the time USF was playing Tulsa. Because I honestly hadn’t paid attention to where the Bulls might (or might not) be on the radio, I fiddled and fumbled trying to find a station carrying the game.

It was supposed to be on WHPT, and maybe it was. However, if that was so, it wasn’t coming in on my radio.

Traffic from the airport was bad, so it took longer than usual to get home. By the time I walked in the door, the first quarter was over, and the Bulls led 28-0.

I guess I missed a few things.

And before that, I had to rely on Bulls Unlimited radio for the Memphis game because our power was still out from Hurricane Milton. By the way, Bulls Unlimited -- available on the TuneIn Radio app -- is a very good source for game coverage and information about USF athletics. Also, Q105 is available on the iHeart Radio app.

Q105 should be easy for listeners in their cars to pick up. Besides that, it is an iconic radio brand in the Tampa Bay market. Listeners of a certain age will remember when the Q Morning Zoo was must-hear radio.

“As we enter a new era of college athletics, the University of South Florida is committed to expanding our reach and deepening our connection with Bulls fans,” USF interim athletic director Jay Stroman said in a statement released by the school.

“This exciting partnership with Beasley Media Group achieves both — introducing a groundbreaking Spanish-language broadcast (in 2026) and leveraging one of the Bay Area’s most powerful legacy FM signals to bring Bulls football to fans across the region.”

It’s more than just about games, however. The partnership with the station should bring USF football more exposure during the week. The deal includes appearances on the station by USF athletes and coaches. Every little bit helps.

There’s more good news.

Jim Louk will return for his 29th season as the voice of the Bulls. He is a walking encyclopedia of information and insight about USF athletics.

Like I said up top, television is king in today’s college football world. That doesn’t mean radio doesn’t have a place.

I mean, you never need to listen to a game on the radio – until you do.
