As January is about to slip into February, the American Conference basketball race has about as much separation as rush hour on Tampa's infamous Malfunction Junction.
With USF's 97-83 road win Wednesday at Tulane, the Bulls are one of four teams tied for first place with a 6-2 conference record. The Bulls are joined at the top by Tulsa, Florida Atlantic, and Charlotte.
But wait! There's more.
Temple, Wichita State, and Memphis are just one game back in the loss column.
That's seven of the American's 13 teams separated by one game.

The Bulls made short work of Tulane, racing to a 13-point halftime lead in New Orleans. They cruised home from there, leading by as many as 24 in the second half.
This time it was Wes Enis leading the way with a game-high 25 points, including five 3-pointers. That gives Enis 40 baskets this season from beyond the arc, which is the most this month of any Division I player.
It also begs the question: If you're playing USF, who in the world do you guard on this team? In their last five games, the Bulls have had four different players lead in scoring.
In their eight conference games, the Bulls have players score in double figures 29 times.
USF continues to lead the American in scoring average at 90.1 points per game. Izayiah Nelson leads the conference in rebounding at 10.1 per game; he had 12 more against Tulane. He also tops the league in field goal percentage.
Enis and Joseph Pinion are in the top five conference players in 3-point percentage, and Enis leads the American with an average 3.6 3-pointers per game.
The next stop for USF is Saturday night in Philadelphia against Temple. The Bulls are 3-0 on the road in conference play.
