As the head coach of the USF men's soccer team for 15 seasons, George Kiefer led the Bulls to high-level success . So when the Bulls needed a replacement, CEO of Athletics Rob Higgins knew just where to look.

Kiefer was announced Wednesday as USF's new coach, replacing Bob Butehorn, who recently retired after nine seasons as the Bulls' head coach,.

"George Kiefer is a name synonymous with the proud history of South Florida men's soccer, and we are thrilled to welcome back one of the most accomplished leaders in our program's history," Higgins said. "I've known George for many years, and I know he has tremendous respect and affection for the University of South Florida and our Bay Area community as well as a drive to win at the highest level."

Kiefer comes back to USF from Grand Canyon University, where his team won the WAC championship this season and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16.

"We support Coach Kiefer in his personal decision to return to a region he considers home. With the support of the university and Lope Nation, we have won four conference championships, qualified for four NCAA Tournaments, and have been nationally ranked within the last eight seasons. We will continue to be aggressive in hiring coaches who will grow GCU's national success," Grand Canyon said in a statement.

Kiefer led USF from 2002-16 before taking the job at North Carolina State. In 2023, he and the university "mutually agreed to part ways."

While at USF, Kiefer led the Bulls to four conference titles and 10 NCAA tournament appearances. They made the NCAA Elite Eight twice.

"I want to extend my gratitude to Rob Higgins for his belief in me, as well as Lelo Prado and Jim Fee for their support during the search process," Kiefer said.

"I also want to thank Jamie Boggs at Grand Canyon; my journey there helped me build a strong foundation in the Lord, and the community at GCU will always be dear to me. I look forward to connecting with Bob Butehorn – whom I consider a friend – and ensuring he remains a part of Bulls soccer as we continue our tradition of excellence."
