USF roundup: A late-arriving quarterback has a quick impact on the Bulls

Gaston Moore was a late arrival to USF’s quarterback room when he transferred from Tennessee in July.

However, as the only quarterback behind starter Byrum Brown who has thrown a pass in college, Moore’s experience could be a factor if Brown gets hurt.

“He's done a phenomenal job so far, just him being here for a couple of weeks,” co-offensive coordinator Kodi Burns said.

“He seems like a guy who's just going to do what you need to do.”

Moore started at UCF in 2020, but didn’t see any action and took a redshirt. He transferred to Tennessee in 2021 and appeared in 14 total games through 2024.

“I look at Gaston as a high-output, low-ego kind of guy. I mean, he just gets it done. He shows up every day, asks the right questions,” Burns said.
“He's hungry to learn and wants to get better each and every day. And I see that on the field, the way he practices on a day-to-day basis.”

Football recruiting update

There is no off-season for recruiting in college football, even when the opening of the 2025 season is less than three weeks away.

With that in mind, a glance at the On3.com team recruiting rankings places USF at No. 62 in the country, one spot ahead of the school to the East known as UCF.

The Bulls have 32 commitments from the high school class of 2026, but, as we know, that number can change rapidly because kids can and do change their minds.

However, a trademark of the Alex Golesh era at USF has been the intensity with which he and the staff attack recruiting.

One of the more interesting names to watch is offensive lineman Jordan Harrison from Washington, D.C.

On3 reported the commitment last February, noting that he chose the Bulls over Power 4 offers from Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, and Boston College.

So far, the commitment is holding.

“USF for me was everything I wanted in a school — experienced coaching staff and a great family,” Harrison told On3’s Mike Singer. “A main factor was just the level of interest the coaches had in me; they made me feel like a priority for their program.”

USF men’s basketball learns first opponent in Battle 4 Atlantis

The Bulls will face VCU on November 26 at 2:30 p.m. The game will be carried on ESPN2.

If USF wins, it will face the winner of Western Kentucky and Vanderbilt at noon on November 27. A loss would drop the Bulls into the consolation bracket.

USF is guaranteed three games in the eight-team event at Atlantis Paradise Island in The Bahamas.

Other teams in the event include Virginia Tech, Colorado State, Saint Mary's, and Wichita State.

Women’s basketball loads up non-conference schedule again

Last season, USF challenged UConn and South Carolina on the road while playing Duke at home. The Bulls also battled Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Louisville, and TCU.

This season, that side of the schedule won’t be any easier.

The Bulls' non-conference opponents for the 2025-26 season include three of last year’s Final Four teams – home games against defending national champion UConn, runner-up South Carolina, and UCLA in Las Vegas for the WCBA Challenge.

They’ll also play Duke at home and travel to Vanderbilt.

The American Conference schedule and dates will be announced later.

Heeeeerrre come the Gators!

The women’s soccer team will host the Florida Gators on Saturday, August 9, at 5 p.m. in an exhibition game at Corbett Stadium.

USF opens the regular season on August 14 at Furman, followed by games at South Carolina and UCF. The home opener is August 24 against Colorado State.

Five of the Bulls’ first six games are on the road.

The men will play Vermont on Monday, August 11, the first of three home exhibitions before the regular season begins August 21 at St. Louis.
