USF roundup: Big night for women's hoops, a title in track & field, baseball tops UCF

The USF women's basketball team closes out its home season on Tuesday night with a game against Temple. The Bulls, 18-11, have won four of their last five games to move into third place in the American Conference.

Four seniors will be honored before the game -- Janette Aarnio, Ines Piper, L'or Mputu, and Carla Brito

Brito will be playing in the 127th game in her four-year career at USF.

Over that time she has averaged 28 minutes per game with 1,117 points, 918 rebounds, and 125 steals. The Bulls close the regular season on Saturday at Tulane.

The conference tournament begins on Tuesday, March 10, in Birmingham. The Bulls have clinched a bye to the tournament quarterfinals.

Baseball Bulls gun for 10th win

Fresh off a series win over the weekend at UCF, the Bulls come home to face Stetson on March 3.

USF is 9-2 under second-year head coach Mitch Hannahs.

Senior Ryan Pruitt has been a catalyst for the team. He has reached base in every game and leads the team in hits, runs, RBIs, total bases, and walks.

Freshman pitcher Michael Senay was given Honorable Mention as the American Conference Pitcher of the Week after he picked up wins over Georgia Southern and UCF. Against the Knights, he allowed only four hits and no runs over seven innings in USF's 2-1 win.

After the Stetson game, the Bulls will be off until Friday when they host Southern University at 6 p.m. The teams will conclude the three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday.

Softball team readies for conference play

The Bulls open American Conference play on Friday with a three-game series at Memphis. USF is 17-8 overall after winning two of five games at the T-Mobile Crimson Classic at the University of Alabama.

USF sandwiched 10-2 and 9-0 wins over Kent State around a pair of 8-0 mercy rule losses to No. 5-ranked Alabama and a 2-1 loss to St. Thomas,

Pitcher Sardia Belle impproved to 4-0 with a complete game shutout of the Golden Flashes. Anne Long got the win in the 10-2 victory that was over in five innings.

Women's lacrosse welcomes Navy to Tampa

The Bulls improved to 4-1 after stopping Brown 13-10 at Corbett Stadium on Sunday. They return to action on Saturday at noon against 5th-ranked Navy in the Salute to Service game.

USF and Brown were tied heading to the fourth quarter when the Bulls pulled away with two goals by Ava Uphues and one by Natalie Kelly.

Uphues had five goals in the game, bringing her to a team-leading 17 for the season.

Navy is 5-0 with wins over 10th-ranked Virginia and 7th-ranked Florida.

Men's Track and Field team wins American Indoor Championship again

USF narrowly held off Wichita State 134.5 to 132 to finish first in the 9-team field at the American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in Birmingham. It was the Bulls' third consecutive indoor title.

Alesandro Cardoso-Williams was named American Freshman of the Year after he won the long jump with a mark of 7.50 meters and added a fourth-place finish in the triple jump at 15.21 meters, delivering critical points toward the team title.

Lilah Versluis was named Freshman of the Year for the women. She placed fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 12.29 meters and added a seventh-place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.70 meters.

The Bulls now await official selections to see who advances to the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., on March 13–14.
