The South Florida volleyball team remains in the mix to qualify for the American Conference post-season tournament, but the Bulls have work to do.
They have two regular-season home matches remaining after a four-set win over Memphis. That improved USF to 7-13 overall and 6-4 in the American. The Bulls currently sit in sixth place in the conference standings with road games remaining at Rice (October 30), East Carolina (November 1) , Tulane (November 13) and Florida Atlantic (November 15).
The top eight teams qualify for the tournament November 20-22 in Tudor Fieldhouse at Rice University.
The closing stretch of the regular-season presents a significant challenge for USF. Rice sits in third place in the conference, East Carolina is in second, while FAU is fifth.
The Bulls swept Rice 3-0 on October 2 at the Corral and took a 5-set in over Florida Atlantic on October 21. They lost a tough 5-set match at home against conference leader Tulane. They have not played East Carolina.
The Bulls played a back-breaking non-conference schedule against many of the nation’s top teams, contributing to their 1-10 start. They have won three of their last four matches.
BaseBulls have a rough outing vs. FSU
It’s a good thing fall exhibition games don’t count on USF’s record because the Bulls took a second straight loss.
Florida State rolled to a 10-1 win in 14 innings over USF at Bay Care Ballpark in Clearwater. The Seminoles retired the first 13 Bulls they faced. The Bulls lost their previous fall game 10-6 against the Florida Gators.
USF has two games left in its fall schedule, both at Red McEwen Field on campus. The Bulls play Florida Southern on November 1 and Air Force on November 7. Both games start at 2 p.m. and will last 14 innings.
There is free admission and parking for both games.
Blackout game set for Bulls football
Well, it won’t quite the scene it might have been, but the Bulls have declared Saturday’s Halloween home game against UAB as the Blackout game.
The idea of having the fans all dressed in black and possibly the players too, although that uniform combo has not yet been announced.
It would have looked really cool at night, but the noon start probably dilutes the effect. Oh well, it’s not like UAB would come out and see a stadium decked out in black and panic.
For what it’s worth, the Bulls wore all black to open last season at home and went on to rout 25th-ranked Boise State.
Hannah Kohn: Basketball is “in my bloodline”
USF women’s basketball team opens its season at the Yuengling Center on November 2 against Furman at 5 p.m.
For USF sharpshooter Hannah Kohn, the niece of former Bulls guard Reggie Kohn. He was a four-year starter for USF (1999-2003).
Hannah transferred to South Florida after spending the previous two seasons at Clemson. She began her career at Chattanooga. Coming to USF takes it full circle.
”I think the sky’s the limit for us, honestly,” she said.
She is renowned as a fearless 3-point shooter who will give the Bulls a deep threat from beyond the arc.
But even though she said “basketball is in my blood,” it wasn’t her original sport.
”I actually started playing softball,” she said. “But I was always in the gym growing up. My dad, my uncle, my grandpa, the whole basketball family all played somewhere, played pro. I just always came back to basketball for some reason.
”The I realized I wanted to be more serious abut it and play in college. That’s kind of how it started and is now.”
