USF's Keshaun Singleton portal-bound despite Brian Hartline’s elite record with WRs

Incoming USF football coach Brian Hartline is widely regarded as the finest developer of wide receivers in college football. Since 2022, he had five receivers taken in the first round of the NFL draft.

His prized students include Marvin Harrison, Jr., Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Emeka Egbuka, Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, "Scary Terry" McLauren, among others. When Hartline was named the head coach at USF a few weeks ago, it was Christmas morning for Bulls' receivers.

Yet, since then, three Bulls wideouts have been linked to the Transfer Portal, which officially opens on Friday. On Tuesday, it was reported first by On3 Sports that Keshaun Singleton will join Chas Nimrod and Mudia Reuben on a journey to somewhere else, foregoing a chance to be coached by someone with a track record to match the hype,

Plerase make it all make sense. It is interesting to note that according to On3, Singleton will be represented by Shawn O'Dare of the Rosenhaus Agency. O'Dare is also representing Byrum Brown.

Can you say "package deal?"

I don't begrudge players for exercising their right to enter the portal, and college football today is transactional. And I would be shocked if former Bulls coach Alex Golesh has been in Singleton's ear from the moment the news broke of his impending departure.

That's especially true given the news that Auburn's best receiver, Cam Coleman, will enter the portal. He's just one of 29 Tigers who reportedly will enter the portal in the wake of Golesh taking over as the head coach. And this just in, folks -- they aren't real patient in the Loveliest Village on the Plains.

Not long after that broke, Auburn quarterback Deuce Knight also plans to enter the portal. Brown's ears probably perked up at that, but would he really want to spend his last year of college football in what is beginning to look like a total rebuild?

Back on USF, Singleton was the Bulls' top receiver last season, with 50 catches and eight touchdowns. But before USF fans get too worked up, let's see what Hartline will do when he is finally on the job fulltime after staying with Ohio State through the playoffs.

He is known as a ferocious recruiter and can put together an impressive video of all the top draft picks he has developed. Hartline will get players. It's what he does.

If Singleton decided he didn't want to be part of this, that's his business. But when you have an elite coach walk in the door at your position who can tell you about all the guys he sent to the NFL and you say "no thanks," well ... ok.

That's college football today.
