USF wasn't the only American Conference team with a reason to celebrate last weekend

The first full week of action by American Conference football teams was about making snap judgments. The second week was about realizing that, in many cases, reading too much into one game is folly.

Some people wrote off South Florida as a rebuilding project after the Bulls struggled to beat FIU. They fell 17 spots to No. 78 in the ranking of all 136 FBS teams by The Athletic. Beating Army didn't seen to impress the staff there much as the Bulls moved up only four spots this week, behind five other American Conference teams.

Oh well.

We have to give credit to conference teams like North Texas and Florida Atlantic for outstanding performances. But we also wonder if Memphis, last week's conquering hero after beating Group of 6 predicted powerhouse UNLV wasn't fool's gold.

Let's get to it.

Florida Atlantic stuns Navy 38-30

We have to take FAU more seriously than we orginally planned. The Owls knocked off Navy, the preseason favorite in many polls to win the American, behind five touchdown passes from quarterback Caden Veltkamp.

He completed 27 of 33 passes for 386 yards in hel;ing the Owls build a 38-14 lead, which was enough to hold off a late Navy charge.

It was an impressive rebound for FAU a week after Florida blew out the Owls 66-21 to open the season, signaling that the conference race might be a jumbled mess.

The Bulls face Florida Atlantic on Novemer 21 in Boca Raton.

Tulsa moves past Sam Houston 23-17

The biggest news for the Golden Hurricane wasn't so much a close win over the Bearkats that moved Tulsa to 2-0.

No, it was the shocking upset by Oklahoma State over No. 6-ranked Oregon. The Golden Hurricane had taken a decisive win over the Cowboys just a week before to open the season, so Okie's victory allowed Tulsa to bask in reflected glory.

Tulsa's rushing attack gained 241 yards on 40 carries in the win but allowed 316 yards through the air.

The Bulls are not scheduled to play Tulsa this season.

North Texas steamrolls UNLV 44-6

We thought it was impressive when Memphis went to Las Vegas and beat the Rebels 27-21 to open the regular season.

That's when UNT told the Tigers "hold my beer."

The Mean Green are supposed to be rebuilding and it sure looked that way when Indiana rolled over them 52-16 to open the season. Well, we have some allowances there -- the Hoosiers are the defending national champions. In its home opener following that loss, UNT was all over a team that many believed could represent the Group of 6 in the College Football Playoff.

North Texas exposed that as such much rubbish by foring five fumbles and recovering three. It had four sacks and one interception.

USF is not scheduled to face the Mean Green this season.

Boise State 38, Memphis 20

This result may say more about Boise than it does Memphis. The Broncos are now the chic pick to represent the Group of 6 in the playoffs.

The Tigers were 2-0 coming into this game but Boise State's Dylan Riley ran for 206 yards. Maddux Madsen threw for 221 yards and a score and added a rushing touchdown for Boise, which dropped a close game the previous week against Oregon.

The Tigers were 1-of-8 on third down and Boise held a 39:56 to 20:04 edge in time of possession.

USF hosts Memphis on November 12.

Appalachian State 27, East Carolina 24

The Pirates were another team that preseason pundits were high on, but they fell to 0-2 in their home opener.

After a blowout loss at Alabama to open the season, ECU desperately needed to shake that off and take care of business at home. Instead, App State won for the fourth straight time against the Pirates.

The visitors passed for 267 yards and had three rushing touchdowns.

The Pirates travel to Old Dominion this week. USF pays a call on November 6.
